Products Description
ASTM A36 seamless pipe is a carbon structural steel pipe produced by hot rolling or cold drawing, with no weld seam and therefore no weld-related defects. The grade is specified under ASTM A36/A36M, the same specification that covers carbon structural shapes, plates, and bars for riveted, bolted, or welded construction of bridges and buildings, as well as general structural purposes.
A36 is a low-carbon steel (carbon generally ≤0.26–0.30%), which gives it a balanced combination of moderate strength, good ductility, excellent weldability, and stable machinability. It is one of the most widely used carbon steel grades for general structural and low-pressure industrial applications worldwide.

Common Export Sizes & Specifications:
A36 seamless pipe is not tied to a single schedule table; export orders are commonly specified by OD × WT, or by NPS + Schedule. The ranges below reflect what mills routinely offer for export.
| Parameter | Typical Export Range |
| Outer diameter(OD) | 21.3 mm – 630 mm(seamless);some mills quote up to 914 mm for large-diameter seamless |
| Wall thickness(WT) | 2.0 mm – 60 mm;heavy-wall inquiries up to ~80 mm possible depending on mill capability |
| Length | 5.8 m / 6 m / 11.8 m / 12 m;fixed length, random length, or cut-to-length |
| Schedules commonly requested | SCH 10 / 20 / 30 / STD / 40 / 60 / XS / 80 / 100 / 120 / 160 / XXS(as applicable to the OD/WT combination) |
| Surface condition | Black(hot-rolled) , pickled, oiled, black painted, varnished, or protective coating(3PE/PP/FBE on request) |
| Pipe ends | Plain end, beveled end, threaded & coupled;plastic caps on both ends for beveled/plain export pipe |
| Manufacturing route | Hot-rolled seamless / cold-drawn seamless / hot-expanded seamless |
Representative size examples(SCH 40 / SCH 80) :NPS 1½″(OD 48.3 mm) with SCH 40 WT 3.68 mm is a common small-size reference point; larger export sizes such as 20″, 24″, and 30″ are routinely supplied in SCH 40 and heavier schedules for construction and structural piling applications. Because A36 is a structural grade rather than a pressure-vessel grade, buyers should specify whether pressure testing, NDT, or impact testing is required when the pipe is intended for fluid service.
Packaging & Shipping:
Standard export packing: bundled with steel rods/straps, or in coils; bundled pipes are typically secured with at least two or more strapping points to prevent movement during ocean transport.
End protection: plastic caps on plain/beveled ends; threaded ends are coupled and protected.
Marking: heat number, grade, size, standard, and manufacturer's mark applied to the pipe surface; for OD ≥36 mm, markings are typically placed ≥200 mm from the pipe end to avoid handling damage.
Custom packing available for container loading, breakbulk, or project-specific logistics.
Quality, Inspection & Documentation:
Export shipments of A36 seamless pipe normally include material test certificates(MTC / Mill Test Certificate) traceable to the heat number. Mills commonly offer:
Chemical analysis and mechanical property testing per heat/lot.
Hydrostatic pressure test or non-destructive testing(NDT) - eddy current, ultrasonic, or equivalent - on request.
Third-party inspection - SGS, BV, TÜV, DNV, or other nominated agencies.
Dimensional inspection - OD, WT, length, straightness, and end finish.
Typical certifications available from established suppliers include ISO 9001, and product certifications such as CE, BV, SGS, TUV depending on the mill and destination market.

Applications
A36 seamless pipe is selected where moderate strength, good weldability, and cost efficiency are the primary drivers, and where the absence of a seam is valued for structural integrity or forming.
Structural frameworks & construction - building frames, supports, platforms, scaffolding, and general engineering structures.
Bridges & infrastructure - riveted, bolted, or welded bridge components and general structural works covered by the A36 specification.
Mechanical engineering & machinery - machinery components, equipment parts, flanges, and fabricated assemblies.
Low-pressure fluid and gas service - water lines, low-pressure oil/gas distribution, hydraulic lines, and general low-pressure piping where A36 is accepted by the project specification.
General fabrication & processing - bending, cutting, punching, and welding-intensive fabrication due to A36's stable cutting behavior and good weldability.
Selection note: A36 is a structural carbon steel, not a high-temperature or pressure-vessel grade. For elevated-temperature pressure service or critical boiler applications, grades such as ASTM A106 are typically specified instead. A36 is best positioned as a general structural and low-pressure seamless pipe.

FAQ
Q1: Is ASTM A36 seamless pipe the same as A106 pipe?
No. A36 and A106 are different specifications with different scopes. A106 is a seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service with explicit pressure and temperature ratings. A36 is a structural carbon steel specification covering shapes, plates, bars, and pipe where structural integrity and weldability are the primary requirements. For pressure piping at elevated temperature, A106 is normally the correct choice; A36 is appropriate for structural and low-pressure applications.
Q2: Can A36 seamless pipe be welded?
Yes. A36 is a low-carbon steel with good weldability. It can be welded by shielded metal arc welding(SMAW), gas metal arc welding(GMAW), and oxyacetylene welding, among other processes. Preheating is generally not required for thin-to-moderate sections under normal fabrication conditions, but welding procedure qualification should always follow the applicable code.
Q3: What is the difference between A36 seamless and A36 welded pipe?
Seamless A36 is produced from a solid billet pierced and rolled without a welded seam, eliminating weld-seam defects and giving more uniform properties around the circumference. Welded A36 is formed from plate/skelp and seam-welded. Seamless is preferred for structural integrity, pressure containment, and applications involving bending or critical loading; welded pipe can be more economical for large-diameter, lower-pressure structural uses.
Q4: Do you provide Mill Test Certificates(MTC)?
Yes. Every export shipment is accompanied by an MTC showing heat number, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and the specification to which the pipe was manufactured. Third-party inspection certificates(SGS, BV, TÜV, etc.) can be arranged on request.
Q5: What is the typical delivery time?
For stock sizes, shipment can often be arranged within 5–7 days after deposit receipt. For new production of common A36 sizes, lead time is typically 10–15 days; non-standard or heavy-wall sizes may require 20–30 days depending on mill scheduling and quantity.
Q6: Can you supply non-standard sizes or custom lengths?
Yes. A36 seamless pipe can be supplied in cut-to-length, special wall thicknesses, and non-standard ODs within mill capability. Custom surface treatments(pickling, coating, galvanizing)and end finishes(beveled, threaded, grooved)are also available.
Q7: Is A36 seamless pipe suitable for low-temperature service?
A36 is not typically specified with mandatory low-temperature impact testing as a standard requirement. For service below ambient or where notch toughness is critical, impact testing should be explicitly ordered and the suitability of A36 versus a killed, fine-grain or impact-tested grade should be reviewed. The standard A36 mechanical property requirements include elongation but do not mandate impact energy unless separately agreed.
