Chemical Composition

The chemical makeup of ASTM A36 Carbon Steel Plate defines its classification as a low-carbon (mild) steel. The typical composition includes:

‌Carbon (C):‌ 0.25%

‌Manganese (Mn):‌ 1.20%

‌Silicon (Si):‌ 0.40%

‌Phosphorus (P):‌ 0.03% (max)

‌Sulfur (S):‌ 0.03% (max)

Copper (Cu):‌ 0.20%

This specific blend of elements allows for great strength combined with formability, ensuring the steel can be safely welded with minimal caution ‌‌

Mechanical Properties

Property Value
‌Yield Strength‌ Minimum 36 ksi (250 MPa)
‌Tensile Strength‌ 58 – 80 ksi (400 – 550 MPa)
‌Elongation (8 in)‌ Minimum 20%
‌Elongation (2 in)‌ Minimum 23%
‌Allowable Bending Stress‌ 22,000 psi

Note: Mechanical properties may vary slightly based on thickness and heat treatment.

Characteristics and Advantages

1. Superior Weldability and Fabrication

ASTM A36 Carbon Steel Plate exhibits exceptional welding properties, allowing it to be joined using any standard welding method with high-quality results ‌‌. The material is also highly suitable for various machining processes, including punching, grinding, drilling, tapping, and flame cutting ‌‌. With a machinability rate of approximately 72% and an average surface cutting feed of 120 feet per minute, it offers efficient processing capabilities for manufacturers ‌‌.

2. Mechanical Strength and Ductility

This steel grade provides robust structural integrity while maintaining sufficient ductility. It possesses a minimum yield strength of 36 ksi (250 MPa) and a tensile strength ranging from 58 to 80 ksi (400–550 MPa) ‌‌. The elongation properties are notable, with a minimum of 20% in 8 inches and 23% in 2 inches for plates and bars ‌‌. This ductility ensures that structures can deform steadily under stress beyond the yield point, providing critical warning time before potential collapse and enhancing safety in buildings and bridges ‌‌.

3. Cost-Effectiveness and Sustainability

As a carbon steel plate, ASTM A36 is not an expensive material, yet it delivers high performance capable of bearing various system pressures ‌‌. It is fully recyclable; old products can be returned to the furnace to produce fresh steel, supporting circular economy principles in construction ‌‌

Heat Treatment Processes

While ASTM A36 is typically used in the as-rolled condition, it can undergo various heat treatments to alter or improve its mechanical properties:

‌Normalization:‌ Conducted at 899°C to 954°C (1650°F to 1750°F), often as a final treatment after manufacturing ‌‌.

‌Annealing:‌ Performed at 843°C to 871°C (1550°F to 1600°F) to soften the material and relieve internal stresses ‌‌.

‌Stress Relieving:‌ Applied at 677°C to 927°C (1250°F to 1700°F) ‌‌.

‌Carburizing:‌ Done at 899°C to 927°C (1650°F to 1700°F) to increase surface hardness ‌‌.

‌Hardening:‌ Executed at 788°C to 816°C (1450°F to 1500°F) when higher hardness and strength are required for design purposes ‌‌
