Products Description
Duplex stainless steel seamless pipes are manufactured from ferritic-austenitic stainless steels with a balanced two-phase microstructure (typically 40–60% ferrite). The seamless construction is produced by hot extrusion/piercing followed by solution annealing and rapid quenching, which ensures optimum corrosion resistance and toughness. These pipes deliver approximately twice the yield strength of common austenitic stainless steels such as 316L while maintaining superior resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting.
Duplex pipes are supplied in solution-annealed and pickled condition as standard, with optional bright-annealed or electropolished finishes for critical cleanliness applications. Both standard duplex (2205) and super duplex (2507, Zeron 100) grades are available, covering the full range of corrosive and high-pressure service requirements in oil & gas, chemical processing, and desalination industries.

S32760 additionally contains 0.50–1.00% tungsten (W) and 0.50–1.00% copper (Cu), which enhance pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in harsh chloride and sour gas environments. S32205 is the most widely specified grade for general corrosive service, while S32750 and S32760 are selected for the most aggressive conditions, including hot seawater and high-chloride brines .

For pressure-containing applications, the higher yield strength of duplex grades allows thinner wall sections at the same design pressure, reducing weight and partially offsetting the higher per-kilogram cost. This is particularly valuable for subsea pipelines and deepwater risers where weight is critical.

Key Testing & Quality Assurance
Each heat and lot of duplex seamless pipe undergoes rigorous testing to verify both mechanical integrity and phase balance:
- Tensile test - one per lot (transverse or longitudinal)
- Hardness test - per ASTM A790 requirements
- Hydrostatic test - at pressure per standard formula, or NDE substitution
- Eddy current / Ultrasonic Testing - for internal and surface defect detection
- PMI (Positive Material Identification) - portable XRF or OES for chemistry verification
- ASTM A923 intermetallic test - Method A (sodium hydroxide etch), B (Charpy impact), or C (ferric chloride corrosion) to detect detrimental sigma and chi phases
- Ferrite content - typically 40–60% by magnetic or metallographic method
The ASTM A923 test is critical. Intermetallic phases form during improper heat treatment or slow cooling and severely degrade toughness and corrosion resistance. Many EPC project specifications require Method C (the most stringent) for all duplex pipe.
Material certification is issued as EN 10204 Type 3.1 (or 3.2 for third-party witnessed) Mill Test Certificate, with full heat-number traceability.
Applications
1.Oil & Gas
Offshore topsides piping, produced water injection lines, subsea umbilicals, seawater lift and utility piping, and sour service production (within NACE MR0175 limits). Duplex is selected where combined chlorides and H₂S/CO₂ exceed the limits of standard austenitic grades.
2.Desalination & Seawater Systems
Seawater intake and outfall systems, reverse osmosis (SWRO) high-pressure piping, and brine handling. Super duplex is the primary alloy for piping, pumps, and valves in seawater RO desalination plants because of its resistance to crevice corrosion in seawater-.
3.Chemical & Petrochemical Processing
Piping for chlorides and mixed-acid environments, organic acid service, and heat exchangers with high-chloride cooling media. Duplex is particularly suited for sulfuric acid and chlorinated organic solvent environments where 316L fails.
4.Pulp & Paper
Chloride-containing bleaching circuits where conventional stainless steels pit or crack.
5.Power Generation
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) cooling water and brackish water systems.
6.Marine & Shipbuilding
Seawater service, ballast and firewater lines, and offshore platform utility piping.
7.Heat Exchangers & Condensers
High-chloride cooling media where tube wall thinning from corrosion is a concern.
FAQ
Q: What is the real difference between duplex 2205 and 316L stainless steel?
Duplex 2205 offers approximately 2× the yield strength of 316L (~450 MPa vs. ~200 MPa), a significantly higher PREN (~35 vs. ~25), and far superior resistance to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking. 316L has a fully austenitic structure, while 2205 has a balanced 50/50 austenite-ferrite microstructure. Duplex is the correct choice for high-pressure and chloride-rich environments where 316L would pit or crack.
Q: How do I verify that the material is genuine duplex and not substituted?
Grade labels alone cannot prove duplex chemistry or phase balance. Buyers should require heat-number-traceable EN 10204 3.1 MTRs that include PREN calculation, ferrite content, and solution-annealing records. On first orders, arrange third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) with portable PMI spot checks. A standard-grade sourcing process will not protect you with a two-phase alloy.
Q: Can duplex pipes be welded on-site without cracking?
Yes, but controlled procedures are essential. Duplex requires low heat input (typically 0.5–2.5 kJ/mm), interpass temperature control below 150°C, and nitrogen-enriched shielding gas (N₂ + Ar) to maintain the austenite-ferrite balance. Filler metals ER2209 or ER2553 are used depending on grade. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required, but may be specified for thick-walled or critical-service joints.
Q: Is duplex stainless more difficult to machine or fabricate?
Yes, compared to 304/316L. The higher strength causes more tool wear, cutting speeds must be reduced by 25–35%, and bending radius should be greater than 2× OD. Special tooling and coolant systems are needed for drilling and threading. However, modern CNC equipment handles duplex readily with the correct parameters.
Q: What is the price difference between duplex and 316L, and is it worth it?
Duplex 2205 typically costs 10–25% more per kilogram than 316L, and super duplex 2507 costs 30–50% more than 2205. However, duplex often reduces total lifecycle cost through higher strength (allowing thinner walls and lower weight), fewer failures from chloride pitting, and longer service life in aggressive media. For seawater, acid, and oilfield service, the premium is generally justified by reduced maintenance and replacement costs.
Q: What are the NACE MR0175 limits for duplex in sour service?
For S32205 (2205), the qualified limit is typically 10 kPa H₂S partial pressure. For super duplex grades (S32750/S32760), the limit extends to approximately 20 kPa H₂S partial pressure at in-situ pH ≥ 3.5 and chloride levels up to ~5%. All material must be solution-annealed and quenched, and hardness must be controlled to the specified maximum. NACE compliance should be explicitly stated in the purchase specification.
Q: What is the typical lead time for duplex seamless pipe export orders?
Duplex specialty grades typically run 12–20 weeks from order confirmation, versus shorter windows for standard austenitic grades. Orders of 20 tons or more unlock mill-level pricing. Procurement calendars should include a buffer for ocean freight and documentation.
Q: What sizes and schedules are available?
Standard production covers 1/4″ to 10″ NPS (6.35–273.1 mm OD) with wall thicknesses from SCH 5S through XXS. Custom sizes up to 762 mm OD and non-standard wall thicknesses are available on request. Lengths up to 12 meters can be produced.
